The dress comes home in the early hours, goes back into its bag and, for most brides, stays there. Then come a honeymoon and a house to put back together. Under wardrobe light, the dress looks more or less fine. It rarely is, so wedding dress dry cleaning in Sydney is mostly a question of when, and of who collects it. A wedding dress spends twelve hours brushing grass, gravel, a dance floor and a marquee carpet. Meanwhile it absorbs champagne, perspiration, fake tan, make-up and sunscreen from the inside. Most of that is invisible on the night. All of it is visible by the following spring, and by then some of it will not come out. So timing matters more than almost anything else. A pickup in the first few weeks separates a gown that cleans well from one that carries some of the day with it.

The marks that matter most on a wedding dress are the ones you cannot see yet. Book a pickup in the first weeks after the wedding, while they still lift easily; leave it until spring and they have begun to set.
What a wedding dress brings home
We clean a gown for two reasons: what shows, and what will show. Of these, the second group matters more, and it is also the one most often missed.
- The hem. Grass, soil, gravel and dance-floor grime. It usually sits in a band several centimetres deep on the underside of the skirt and the train. It is also visible, and the easiest part of the job.
- Champagne and white wine. They dry clear, so almost nobody notices them on the night. Then the sugar oxidises over weeks and months into pale brown blooms that look like water marks. The longer they sit, the deeper they set.
- Perspiration. Inside the bodice and under the arms. Invisible at first; however, it yellows silk and satin over time and weakens the fibre where it sits.
- Fake tan, foundation and sunscreen. At the neckline, the inside of the bodice and the cuffs of a sleeve. All of these have an oil base, so we treat them as such rather than simply washing them.
- Lipstick, red wine and cake. The marks everyone notices. Usually small and often at the front. A specialist asks about these first, because the treatment is different for each.
The sugar stains are the reason the clock matters. When fresh, they usually lift cleanly. Six months on, however, they have become part of the fibre. Even a specialist is then working to reduce rather than remove.
When to book wedding dress dry cleaning after the wedding
Within a few weeks of the wedding, and ideally before the honeymoon if there is time. If not, straight after. You do not need to unpack or inspect the dress first. Instead, it goes into the pickup as it is, in its bag. We then inspect it at intake, with the record of the day in front of us. A bride who remembers the spills, and where they landed, saves time. However, it is not essential, because a specialist reads a gown in good light and finds what the night left. Wedding dress dry cleaning in the first few weeks gives the best result. If the gown still has its care label, the Product Safety Australia guide to care labels explains each symbol.
If the wedding was months ago, or longer, it is still worth doing. The result depends on the fabric and the time elapsed. We are honest about that at inspection, before any work begins. Our wedding dress cleaning service explains how we assess the gown and what to expect.
How wedding dress dry cleaning differs from ordinary dry cleaning
A gown is not a dress with a long skirt. It is typically three to five fabrics in one garment, and each behaves differently in cleaning. Also, nobody designs the construction that holds them together with cleaning in mind. We therefore plan wedding dress dry cleaning gown by gown rather than in a general batch.
- Silk satin, mikado and crepe. Beautiful, and the most sensitive to water, heat and agitation. As a result, watermarks and shine are the risks.
- Tulle and organza. Fine, dry, and easily crushed or torn. So we clean and reshape the layers individually.
- Lace. Often a different fibre from the body of the dress, with a different reaction to the same solvent. We also treat corded and guipure lace as embellishment.
- Beading, sequins and pearls. Glued or stitched, sometimes both, with finishes that dissolve in the wrong solvent. We test them first, then clean around them by hand.
- Boning, padding, horsehair and buttons. The structure inside the bodice and the hem that holds the shape. It needs to come out of cleaning as it went in.
For that reason, we do not clean a wedding dress with the general run of garments. Instead, we inspect it and test each fabric and trim. Then we treat stains by hand according to what caused them. Finally, we clean the gown with an eco-friendly solvent chosen for the most delicate element in it. Finishing is by hand: each layer steamed and shaped, the bodice reshaped, the train laid out. Our guide to embellished and sequin dresses covers the handwork in more detail.
Clean, then decide: wear, keep or pass on
Cleaning is the first step whatever happens to the dress next. A gown going into long-term storage needs to be clean before it goes in. That is because any sugar or perspiration left in the fibre is exactly what yellows it in the box. Similarly, a gown you sell or pass to a sister or daughter needs to be clean before anyone wears it. Equally, a gown you plan to shorten or dye for another occasion needs to be clean before anyone works on it.
Some brides want the dress kept as it was on the day. For them, our wedding dress preservation service follows the clean with boxing intended for decades of storage. Our guide to preserving a wedding dress also explains what that involves. Meanwhile, the rest of the bridal party has its own needs. Our notes on bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses and the groom’s suit cover those.
Wedding dress dry cleaning pickup across Sydney
- Book online. Choose a collection day and note that the garment is a wedding dress. Also mention any spills you remember.
- Leave it in its bag. There is no need to unpack, air or attempt any spot treatment first. Home remedies on silk and tulle cause more work than they save.
- We inspect and confirm. We assess the gown at intake and confirm the price with you after inspection, before the cleaning begins.
- It comes back finished. Cleaned, hand-finished, covered and hanging, or boxed for preservation if that is what you have chosen.
Luxe collects from the door across 58 suburbs in the Eastern Suburbs, Lower North Shore, CBD and Inner West. The area runs from Bondi to Mosman, North Sydney and Glebe. Standard turnaround is three to five days for most garments. However, we schedule a wedding dress at booking, because the hand finishing takes the time it takes.
Wedding dress dry cleaning: your questions, answered
How long after the wedding can I wait to have the dress dry cleaned?
Within a few weeks. Champagne, perspiration and fake tan dry invisible, then brown over the following months. So the sooner we clean the gown, the more fully those marks lift. If it has been longer, it is still worth doing, and we tell you at inspection what to expect.
Can a wedding dress with old stains still be cleaned?
Usually we can improve it, and often considerably. On some fabrics, however, we reduce set sugar and perspiration stains rather than remove them. We inspect every gown first and explain the likely result before any cleaning begins.
Should I try to spot-clean the dress myself first?
No. Water on silk satin leaves rings, and rubbing tulle tears it. Also, most home stain products set a sugar stain rather than lift it. Instead, leave the dress as it is, in its bag, and note any spills when you book.
Do you clean the dress before preservation?
Yes, every time. We never box a gown uncleaned, because anything left in the fibre is what yellows it in storage. Cleaning comes first; preservation, if you choose it, follows with boxing made for long-term storage, as our preservation service describes.
How much does it cost to dry clean a wedding dress in Sydney?
It depends on the gown: the number of layers and fabrics, and any beading or lace that needs hand cleaning. Also, the length of the train matters, as does how long any champagne or tan marks have been setting. For that reason, we confirm the price after inspection rather than quoting it online. Indicative starting prices for wedding dresses are on our pricing page, and pickup and delivery is $25 flat.
